School Screening for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis using Angulometer®

Screening for scoliosis in school program is prescriptive screening with a strong element of case finding on a selected group at higher risk for the disease and this programs have benefited many children through early detection and treatment.
The purpose of this article is to examine the available evidence from scoliosis-school screening.
Thirteen to Fifteen boys and girls of one middle school (boys : 418, girls : 362) at Dajeon city, South Korea were evaluated. In this screening program, we considered positive anyone who had clinically observed head tilting, trunk asymmetry, asymmetrical shoulder level, pelvic level and measured the angle of trunk rotation on the Adams forward bending test using Angulometer®. Follow up study and the management for those who considered positive are recommended.
The results are as follows: 1) Grouping the boys and girls according to the angle of trunk rotation, there are 4 divisions, such as group of normal range, of 0.5∼2°, of 3∼4°, of more than 5°. Their prevalence are 307(73.4%), 4(1.0%), 3(0.7%), 104(24.9%) in boys, and 258(72.4%), 64(17.7%), 30(8.3%), 10(2.8%) in girls and have no significant differences between boys and girls. The axis of trunk rotation is divided to 3 subgroup, like as, normal, right and left side.
Their frequencies are 573(73.5%), 89(11.4%), and 105(13.5%). Besides them, there are 13 students(1.7%) showing the spinal curvature bended posterior, as it called, kyphosis and there are no significant differences between boys and girls. The angle of trunk rotation is positively correlated with the students´ heights, but has no association with their weights.
We found that more than 30% of middle school students need to take the according to the results. The elementary school students group also need to take the screening program for scoliosis.
